Beautiful concert yesterday afternoon at the Rita Beautiful concert yesterday afternoon at the Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum. ☀️🎶 Alexandria Le (Artist Director of the series RDA Performs), curated a concert pairing Baroque with new music with clarinet improvisations performed by Bryan Conger connecting each of the sets. Really enjoyed the performances of Baroque music featuring Jonathan Lee, Richard Kravchack, Ka-Wai Yu, and Ana Rangal Ortiz and grateful to Bryan, Megan Kearny, and Ryan Bond for beautiful performances of my pieces “Cloudline,” “Time’s Arrest,” and “Effervescence.” At the beginning of my set, Bryan improvised an interlude connecting Couperin’s “Pieces in A minor” performed by Jonathan Lee on harpsichord with my new duet “Cloudline” (2025) for alto sax and bowed vibraphone featuring Megan and Ryan. “Cloudline” was inspired by memories I had from a skydiving experience years ago. When looking out into the sky from the plane, no longer seeing the ground, all I saw were clouds and I wondered what it would be like if they were there to hold me up and keep my afloat, like wading in water. When writing this, I imagined the bowed vibraphone lines to be like the airy surfaces of the clouds. Ryan played my vibraphone interlude, “Time’s Arrest” (2016), in between the duets. The inspiration for writing this came from reading Robert Browning poem titled “Now.” The first line is: “Out of your whole life give but one moment.” “Effervescence” (2025) for clarinet and vibraphone closed the set. The duet is a fun interplay between the clarinet and vibraphone, like a dance of air bubbles. I was thinking fondly of Bach two-part inventions when writing this. I also had a great time reconnecting with friends and supports of the arts who came to this concert. ☀️ This Saturday, the next RDA PERFORMS concer ☀️ This Saturday, the next RDA PERFORMS concert, curated by Artistic Director Alexandria Le, will feature Baroque and new music pairings with improvisation woven throughout at the Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum. I’m excited to be a part of this collaboration with Alex representing the Nextet series alongside Jonathan Rhodes Lee’s Early Music Ensemble. Jonathan’s group will present works by Handel, Vivaldi, and Couperin and I’m excited to share my new duets Effervescence and Cloudline. Effervescence will feature clarinetist Bryan Conger with Ryan Bond (vibraphone) and Cloudline will feature Megan Kearney on alto saxophone with Ryan (bowed vibraphone). He will also perform my miniature vibraphone interlude, Time’s Arrest. Bryan will be presenting his improvisations on clarinet, connecting each of the pieces on the program. Celebrating today because I received my tenure let Celebrating today because I received my tenure letter. This has been a dream of mine and so incredibly happy to receive tenure at UNLV. I love teaching my students, collaborating with my colleagues, and curating the Nextet series concerts. Furthermore, it’s been a wonderful experience to meet, work with, and develop connections with organizations and supporters of the arts in Las Vegas. Looking forward to making more plans and meeting more goals! 🎶🩷🎉😊

I was inspired by images and descriptions of cirrus clouds (“thin, wispy, white, high-altitude clouds composed of ice crystals”). The performance is entirely improvised after the opening measures. Shahab Zargari shot and edited it, and I selected stock footage to include in the video. Thanks, Shahab! @shahabzargari Thought this would be great to share now since it’s chilly outside! I was incredibly happy to be on stage to perform and share my new piano piece VOLUTUS at Myron’s last night. Many thanks to Keith Thompson for having me be a part of his showcase again, and for also featuring UNLV composition student, Julius Trenkler. Julius had his debut last night, singing his new song “Myself in You” for a packed audience. What a fun and special night! 2025 was a special year for me primarily because o 2025 was a special year for me primarily because of the wonderful collaborations. I am thrilled to share that after several months of work, I finished the mixes for my new album, CATCHING CLOUDS. This album comprises nine new works I composed/reworked for clarinet (Bryan Conger), alto sax (Shawna Pennock), vibraphone (James Doyle), and piano (me). The tracks are connected like a multi-movement composition with themes that return throught the album. 1. Cloudbreak (vibraphone and piano) 2. Serpentine Arroyo (clarinet, vibraphone, and piano) 3. Cirrus (piano improvisation) 4. Effervescence (clarinet and vibraphone) 5. Querencia (clarinet, vibraphone, and piano) 6. Cloudline (alto saxophone and bowed vibraphone) 7. Volutus (piano) 8. Drift into Midnight (clarinet, vibraphone, and piano) 9. Catching Clouds (clarinet, alto sax, vibraphone, and piano) I’m extremely grateful to them for this collaboration. Chuck Foley from the UNLV Recording studio recorded and mixed this and Gil Kaupp is mastering the album. Still lots to do (!), but incredibly relieved to move on to the next stages and cannot wait to share videos in the future, along with updates about the album release. Seven of the nine tracks include piano and as of tonight, the clarinet and piano tracks are set and now I just have to track alto sax and vibraphone. One of my favorite activities at UNLV is organizin One of my favorite activities at UNLV is organizing the @unlvnextet series concerts, and last Monday’s concert was such a wonderful event featuring many of our UNLV faculty and students. In addition to great performances, two of our graduate students had premieres of their pieces (congrats, Matthew Nell and Colin Marks on creating such beautiful works). @matthew_triangle @marksmusique Congrats to everyone involved!
